University IB Recognition Policies

IBO

The following information is found on the IBO website:

"Over 800 colleges and universities in North America have established written policies that explain how they evaluate IB Diploma credentials.  These policies provide information on admission, advanced credit, and advanced standing for the IB student.  Until recently they were available only through the publication Recognition Policies of North American Universities, which was only sold by the IBO Publications department in Cardiff, Wales.  Since 15 July 1999, these polices have been available exclusively on the IBO web site at www.ibo.org.

Among the many advantages of this new service are:

  • Greater Access - anyone with access to the World Wide Web has access to this service.  This means that students, parents, counselors, teachers, administrators, universities, and the general public can view the policies when they want, where they want, and as often as they want.
  • Lower Cost - make that no cost. This is a totally free service, no matter how many times you use it.
  • Better Information - college and universities can make changes to their published policy at any time, and will have the opportunity to update their policy and their contact information every six months, instead of every 18-24 months.  That means that the names, numbers, acts and figures about a college or university are going to be more accurate than ever before.
  • Faster information - The records are in a powerful database, so you can organize your searches quickly and efficiently.  For instance, search to find all the universities that recognize the IB Diploma in a single state or province. Or search for the words "scholarship" or "sophomore standing"?
  • Hot links to College Home Pages - Each record contains a hot link to the home page of the college or university.  Click twice to access all the information that the college has put on the web - academic offerings, campus life, cost, deadlines.  Often you will even be able to download the application for admission, or ever apply on line.
  • Better Policies - the bottom line.  Because colleges and universities know that their IB policies are going to reach more people, and be more carefully scrutinized, they are responding to the opportunity to create a new IB Diploma recognition policy or to improve upon and old one.  Of course, how a college or university regards the IB Diploma is only one factor in the challenging decision about where to continue your education.  But, wherever you go, you should know what to expect, and this service will give you that information."
