Diploma Requirements

IBO

Candidates for the IB diploma must satisfy assessment requirements [internal and external] in six subjects, each studied over a period of two years [grades 11-12], except that not more than two standard level courses may be completed in the first year [11th grade] of the programme.  The six subjects must be selected from six groups…at least three and not more than four subjects being offered at higher level and the others at standard level.  Recommended teaching is 240 hours for higher level courses and 150 for standard level courses.

A candidate is normally eligible for a grade only if work has been submitted for all components of the assessment in the subject.  When a candidate fails to attend an [IBO] examination, or submit all work for a component in a given subject, no grade is normally awarded.  An N will be issued for the subject and level.  A diploma will not be awarded if the candidate does not have numeric grades in all six subjects registered for the diploma.

In addition to the six subjects, candidates for the IB diploma must

  1. take a course in, and submit the required assessment in, Theory of Knowledge, for which the IBO recommends at least 100 hours of teaching over the two-year period of the Diploma Programme [grades 11-12]
  2. complete an approved programme of extra-curricular activities know as CAS [minimum of 50 hours in each category: Creativity, Action, Service]
  3. complete and submit for assessment an extended essay in a subject available for this purpose.  Work on the essay, which is expected to occupy approximately 40 hours, must be done under the direct supervision of an appropriate teacher at the school.
